we went to visit the K100 as she was being back together, Dom has a question:  The Frame has 2 sets of numbers< One being obliterated< the other.... 0001720K100.
He rang BMW today to ask about this but couldnt get an answer, yet, They confirmed that the chassis number is correct to the bike coming off the production line in Oct 83, but he wonders why would there have been a previous number? we have deciphered some of it but are at a loss to why there is that other number there
This is what we think it is : AOP 2425-L2PP.
I will try and put a picture on here for Dom, hopefully that may help

That is the chassis number but not the VIN. VIN gives all the particulars of the bike in numeric code. It looks like the VIN on that bike has been obliterated. Usually that's occurs to mask that the chain of ownership has gone pear-shaped.

On my bike's frame, the VIN is 17 characters in length. The UK setup might be different.

That bike, like several of mine, is too early for the universal VIN pattern. The pattern has applied internationally since somewhere in the vicinity of 1990, though I don't know if all countries adopted simultaneously.
The pattern since then is the 17 digits that Laitch mentioned, beginning with a 3 digit manufacturer code - WB1 for BMW which applies to both cars and bikes.
Prior to that, the frame number was a purely in-house code, devised by BMW and finishing with the model type, such as K100RT on most of mine.
In earlier times, a frame or chassis number was only on a riveted on plate somewhere on the vehicle. Very secure!

Only guessing, but the other stuff may be some supplementary identification applied by some previous owner.

Bill

I should have done this before. There is a site called bimmer.work which gives info.

The bike is a K100 basic, made in Spartanburg on 1 September 1983. Made for delivery in England, colour Metallic Red 575.
No optional equipment listed, though there may have been dealer fitted options.

A BMW dealer may be able to get details on any warranty or recall work, but service data would only be with the dealer who did it, in the unlikely event they still have it.

Wow Bill, that just blew us both away, Dom cant thank you enough for that info. Every little helps, and its great to know she was so early in production. He is more intent on keeping her original.

Spartanburg isn't correct, they only make cars.
All K's is made at the factory in Spandau, Berlin.

My K also has a change in number. The engine is 3284 but they changed the frame number from an RS to an RT. It came from the UK too.

Spartanburg must be correct - it was on the internet.  Razz

But you said it was Spandau, and that was also on the internet. What do we do now?  Shocked

For edification purposes only: the US & Canada started using 17 digit VINs for the 1980 model year on all autos and motorbikes, but most of the rest of the universe didn't use the same system for many years. My 10/86 OZ K100RS has the more typical chassis number "VIN" consisting of several zeroes, then a serial production number, followed by K100RS. Nowadays in OZ, as in other countries, it's the now-common 17 digit system that's used. Often the North American market sets the pace for these sorts of things then it's followed up by others.

Well helensmellen ......party time?

ChatterChatterChatterChatterChatterChatterChatterChatterChatter

Just after Christmas, at Stradbally in Co Laois, we have a K get together for a Christmas brunch and Christmas pudding. Last time Born Again Eccentric came over for it.

Its about an hour or so from Dublin port.......we meet up at 11am and head off around 1pm so we can do all the travel in daylight and not interfere with family activities.

Stradbally Fayre provide an excellent brunch and we follow that with generous Christmas pudding and cream, ice cream, custard, brandy butter or whatever is your preference.

Those that ask nicely get a pudding to bring home with them........

Now all we have to do is arrange the date...separate thread for that but since Christmas is a Monday, likely to be Wednesday 27/Thursday 28/Friday 29/Saturday 30.

So what don't you come over and see how it works!! Because it's winter and weather may be poor bike is optional, its a sociable occasion.

Advance orders for puddings for postal delivery accepted too! Dai, Trapper, Ringfad, 88, Comberjohn, CluainSi, SqMayhew, Born Again Eccentric already have their orders in!!
