There are plenty of good "how to" articles out there but as far as I know none show the tang you need to find to release the lock barrel from the clamp.

When I first did a set it took me ages to locate it as the articles (the ones that I've read anyway) tried to describe the location.

I've just done another set and thought I'd get a photo of the tang in place, it may help anyone like me who struggled to find it the first time.

Nice pics.
I found the tang on the seat/helmet loop lock kind of challenging to release......can't see it at all in there!
Any special tools for that one?
Oh....BTW....besides the normal clean & lube ideas....is there any way to improve the opening of those latches so the'll really POP over the detent when trying to open them with just one hand. Mine are a little old & stubborn, and it often takes 2 hands to get the latch to pop up. Geeeeeeze I hate that

I'm not keen on WD40 as a lubricant, it doesn't last very long (that's not what it was designed to do). I use white grease in an aerosol can with a tube. It allows me to get the grease where it needs to be on the hinges and slides. Being grease it lasts well.

I just just purchased a 88 K100LT with no keys at all, can I take a compartment lid with lock to locksmith to obtain a ignition key? Or what are my best options.

Hello!

Take the frame number and go to the next BMW dealer and order a new key. That's how we do it here. A copy does any locksmith, if he is good.

Cheers

The compartment lids have only 4 tumblers and the ignition lock has 5 so you will need the ignition lock or steering lock.

I bought a derelict parts K100 all in pieces once.  It sat in my garage for several months and I forgot that I'd duct-taped the key to the frame so that I wouldn't lose it. So when I got around to the fuel tank (having forgotten about the key,) I just took the whole gas tank, with about a gallon of really old gas/water in it, to a locksmith to get the lock picked. Fortunately the guys at the locksmith had a good sense of humor because when they picked the lock to get the gas cap open it stank up their whole shop. affraid

That would work if the ignition switch hasn't been changed in 29 years.  Laughing No guarantees there.

With minimal ability and a bit of patience I followed this link last year and re-did my pannier locks to work with the new key for the ignition and gas cap I bought.  Worked a charm and now I only have to worry about one key.  I just acquired a 22L top case and will probably attempt the same.

The 22L locks can be a little finicky to get the lock core out.  But don't give up as it is possible.

I did check with the Local BMW Dealer and on checking they advised that the key is NLA from supplier in Malaysia using VIN.

Is the Tank key the same as ignition key?  ( ex Factory)

Hello!

As I said, take the framenumber, go to the BMW dealer, he will do 2-3 clicks on his computer and you will get a new key.
Was 6,29€ for me, than make a copy at the locksmith and put the original somewhere safe.

This will only work if the locks haven't been change.

Cheers

Here in the US, not all dealers will do this. Don't know if the root cause is stubbornness or ignorance.

If you want I can ask here about a key as my friend works for the local BMW dealer and they are helpful [at a BMW price of course]. I got things before and all they needed was the 7 digit VIN, first one or 2 digits being zero.

Looks like small money I will happily post over, only takes no more than a week and isn't even price of a beer. If it's big money get another ignition and rekey the other locks.

You can open the gas tank with SidecarPaul's little hole drilled for emergency opening, just put a grommet in it.
