k100 85 sitting in the garage owned for last 5 years the idea was to customise it
k11 wheels 3 spoke, k11 forks, lots bought but its still as i bought it.
I suppose first thing is to get it back on the road,  bounce

Welkome aboard from down here in Oz.

Probably the best way to get your project going and keeping up the enthusiasm is to meet up in person with some of the forum members in the UK. I'm sure you would find the love of owning, tinkering with and riding a K bike would rub off on you. Don't wait until you have your project finished - go to a meet up as soon as you can, even if it is on 4 wheels because you will be made welkome.

Lots of ideas and info on here.

In my limited experience, these bikes don't take kindly to sitting for years on end and consigning them to the back of the shed is a Kruel thing to do.

While I'm not a fan of "customisation", I'm not a purist either, but I think you're right about getting her back on the road first - before you start any mods. 

Having sat dormant for so long, you may encounter all sorts of issues (especially if the tank has old petrol in it) - the battery is probably toast, electrical connections will be breaking down (invest in a can of DeOxit - available through Amazon), switch contacts (including the brake and ignition switches) will be oxidised heavily (especially in the, at times, damp atmosphere of the lake district - the lakes are there for a reason) and many rubber components will have aged badly. All fluids will need changing (engine oil, fork oil, gear oil and final drive and I would replace the coolant too). Oh, yeah...and despite what they might look like tread-wise, your tyres will have hardened and definitely will need changing or the handling will be very poor!

Holy cow - this sounds depressing....but it really isn't that bad. There is a mine of information on the forum that give info about all these jobs and a good range of suppliers out there (Motobins, Motorworks and James Sherlock all provide good spares service).

Get these jobs done and get her out for a season blasting around the fabulous countryside of the Lake District (and further afield) and get the feel for her and enjoy a little reward for all your hard work...before you embark on the customisation.

If you go straight for the customisation, you will end up very frustrated when things don't work and you end up chasing your tail. Net result - bike ends up at the back of the shed again or flogged off on eBay as yet another unfinished project!

Your choice - but welcome and enjoy!

I would agree with everything BAE said.

Get it running nicely first and in fact you might be rather surprised. All the things mentioned are really age related and which in fact can be quite simply sorted.

Ask on the forum, lots of us have resurrected bikes that sat for years, met all the things and they are not too bad.

Two components that do suffer from sitting are the water pump and rear engine seal [and also sprag clutch]. If your skills include doing these two jobs then you have a great bike to work with.

Parts availability is excellent too.

everything is working fine starts up first prod and idles nicely, its just been neglected for rideouts, petrol and oil always changed at min. yearly, battery good, Tyres will be have to be changed for MOT it went on a few rides but the club I was in was the Furness British motorcycle club and the Royal Enfield nearly always got used - Heart Probs have taken me off bikes for 18 months odd, but hopefully I will be able to return, of course its not the lightest bike so here's hoping Smile

If, during the annual (or bi-annual) spline lube you somehow have managed to get hold of a K1100 mainstand assembly from ebay, FIT IT!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy  It makes hauling the weight of a K100 backwards a hell of a lot easier. Oh aye - and save the sidestand springs off the original assembly. About a month ago I just threw out two K100 mainstand assemblies complete with sidestand springs and of course, I'm now looking at one spring dangling in the breeze.

Hi Dai,
that's something i've not got, but will need if I want to keep a centre stand because I did put the wider 3 spoke wheel on the back which clears swinging arm and exhaust but the centre stand cant be retracted, so its either find a k11 stand or take it off, and like you've reminded me I need a spline lube which I will do when I change tyres on the y spoke wheels. I never noticed any difficulty putting it on the centre stand though especially when hauling up on hand lever thingy at the same time, i havent got any fairings/luggage on it so that probably makes a huge difference. I just changed on my K75 the mainstand yesterday to a used K1100 mainstand, lifting up is easier but the main reason is that the K 8V stands break!
I used the side stand from may K75 with the assembly so pulling the clutch lifts the side stand up.
The Supporting bracket from K75 K100 K1 K1100 are al the same

Works great, I recommend doing that
I will do the same with my other K75.
