Not sure whether this issue has been covered so here goes. On a 1997 K1100RS ----- In the red circle of the sight glass what is the amount in CC between the upper and lower line?

I'm getting numerous different amounts from 'experts'.

Cheers

I wouldn't call it an "issue". I think I worked it out once but I've since forgot. I think it was somewhere around 100ml.
I'm curious why you need to know?

As stated -------I'm getting numerous different amounts from 'experts'. Now the figures range from 100 to 800ml.

I would say much the same as Holister 100 up to maybe 150ml but very definitely not 800ml or anything close.
My K1100 uses a fair bit of oil and 500ml will do for two top ups from bottom to the top of the sight glass and with some left over.

I suspect the reason no one knows for sure is that when the oil level is low I take some oil, pour a little in, wait a moment, and check the sight glass.  If it is around the dot, I put the plug back in.  If it is still low I add a little more.  I have never measured how much I put in.

You need to keep in mind that it can take several minutes for all the oil to drain back to the oil pan and reach the final level in the sight glass after the engine is shut down.  Checking and filling too soon will result in the oil level appearing to rise more for a  given amount of oil added.

Having said that, my experience is that about 150ml will take the level on my K100 from near the bottom to just above the dot on the sight glass.

Again, why are you so interested in knowing this?

To Rick,

I would say much the same as Holister 100 up to maybe 150ml ---------------------------If it is this amount than your top of 500ml will do for two top ups, therefore 250 each time doesn't exactly add up.

To Point-Seven-five

You need to keep in mind that it can take several minutes ---Yes I agree and I have made allowances for this.

150ml will take the level on my K100 from near the bottom to just above the dot on the sight glass. --------------------Which means that in total it takes 300.

Again, why are you so interested in knowing this?----------------------Because as I have already stated, information received doesn't agree and clearly this is the same here.

Three riders feedback and three different answers.

Why don't you become one of the experts, Frank? Put your bike up on the side stand. Drain all the oil, change the filter, refill with oil, take a run, come back then start removing 100cc at at time and photograph the oil level's position on the sight glass after each removal. The contribution to the knowledge base would be tremendous.

SO if it takes 150ml to get from the lower line to the middle dot you automatically assume that another 150 will take it to the upper line.  How do you come to that number?

It seems you are only asking your question to generate conflicting answers.

Let me help you.

When my sight glass is at the lower line it takes 274 ml to get to the middle dot.

Here's another one for you:

When the level is at the middle dot, I add 7 liters to get to the top line.

Don't bother replying, clearly you have nothing better to do.

I think its great how every now and then a new oil thread pops up. There's always something new to talk about when it comes to oil.  cheers

The K1100 Riders Manual also has 0.6L as the amount between the high and low marks, Basic2, but it must be assumed that the figure was developed by experts and, therefore, is suspect.  Smile

Holister -----------------------Frank - What are you going to do with this piece of information?----------------------Now I'll go and buy a small measuring cup. I have, on numerous times managed to just overfill the sump, now its a thing of the past.

Laitch ------------ The K1100 Riders Manual also has 0.6L as the amount between the high and low marks------------------Excellent, now with you confirming Basic2 that's the figure I'll go by.

I am going to lay some concrete today. It will be a 3 metre by 2 metre slab at 30 cms deep and will be just outside my garage. It will be made perfectly level. Its purpose will be to very accurately check the oil level in the sight glass on my K, because if the ground is not perfectly level there could be 50cc too much or 50cc too little oil in there.
Yes I know that BMW say as long as you see oil in the sight glass then it is fine, but I don't believe them and in my opinion there must be a huge detrimental effect in not having the level exactly on the dot.  Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Frank,

That would be a shame - the forum thrives on a healthy exchange of information interwoven with a little humour. Unfortunately, humour often doesn't work quite as the humourist intended. I am sure no offence was meant.

Oil is like tyres - everyone has an opinion (yes...I know oil is actually nothing like tyres...before the smartass comments start!!)Evil or Very Mad

For my tuppence ha'ppeny worth (one of my K100Lts uses oil steadily (but no leaks or smokey exhaust) but the other hardly uses any) I have never measured how much oil it takes - when I get towards the bottom of the glass (as measured on a cold engine, on centre stand and level ground) -  I top the sump up until I get to the top of the glass...taking it steadily once I am over ⅔ way up so I don't inadvertently overfill.

I guess a good reason for knowing how much oil it takes from bottom to top of glass (or bottom to the dot, if you are one of those who fill to the dot - my manual says the correct level is the top of the sight glass) is if you are going touring and want to / need to take a bottle of oil with you for occasional top ups on the road. I simply pack a 1 litre bottle in one of my glove box storage bins - fits nicely and doesn't take up too much space which is better used for camping gear, beer, wine, cake etc.

We beauty is great,
Wondering mind 'til We sees,
Escapeing is all I do,
While waiting for the moment, for We to say "I do."

Fain would I kiss my Julia's dainty leg,
Which is as white and hairless as a K100RS SE.

Not bad, not bad at all Laitch.

Shift
Rolling
Into it
Solid lines now
Right grip tightens down
Moving traffic seems to stop
Destination rushes to the wheels
A corner blends effortlessly
Clutch pulled slightly
My BMW K75 roll
Halt

We see you Kando too!

This stuff helps.  Leprachaun

I blame it on the Christmas pudding.

I was making the Christmas Puddings for the entire of the get together at Stradbally Fayre on 28th December, plus a few special requests for some for home consumption. Stradbally Fayre very kindly serve it to the Eccentrics with Kream [Kustard for Cluain Si].

I think some of the Guinness might have failed to make it into the puddings.

For anyone who wants to Kome along, 11am 28th December, 11am to about 1pm for Brunch and Pudding. Travel by K or Kar. Stradbally Fayre is just off the M7, take N80 Carlow exit and its 6 miles down towards Carlow, on the left as you enter Stradbally.

About an hour and 15 minutes from Dublin ferryport.

Alas poor K, I know him well.
A ride of infinite pleasure.
Whether 'tis nobler to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous ridicule
Or simply rise up
And ride the miles on a brick.

Shakespeare revisted.

Is the Sight-glass half full or half empty?

The very important thing to know ,
Is not if the sight-glass dot is half way up or half way down,
These thoughts really have no pupose and will make you frown,
The truth is, keep on the line and ride the road, the only way to go.

See the sight-glass dot halfway up,  the bricK has quantity so it won't stop,
But for the sight-glass dot to be halfway down will impress the need to gently drive,
So when it's low my soul knows to savour every mile to unseized arrive,
And put some oil in, no further must it drop.

But first, I learned today..........you must be able to see the sight-glass dot!

With apologies to Jo. R Escher for mangling his work!

Life with Oil - 2051
The oil is gone, gone is the oil,

There is no oil for us to boil,

To power our bikes,

To package our trikes.

If there is one thing I love in life its this forum and the humour in it,
A motley bunch we are but full of spirit, wit and know how.
I wouldn't swap it for anything less, fill your glass
And let 2017 bring us all a lot more happiness.

This I must say, for me it has brought friends,
Rides trips and places to go, people to meet,
But our thoughts must also remain, for members
Who are gone from us to more heavenly pastures.

Been reading this post for a while now , what was it about Laughing . and why does a k1100 use more oil than a k100 Question , I thought the sight glass was for seeing how black my oil can get before I have to change it . too many kays  too many oils to keep up with.  Just finished extending the shed to fit em all anyhow I reckon a k would run with a bit of sausage fat in her you can't kill emm . Oh yeah about 100 ml.                CHEERS   AB
