Hi, I need civilian type side panels / battery covers on both sides of my 1990 K75RT. Must be in good condition, not broken or damaged in any way. I am going to paint them, so the state of the paint does not really matter much. Please answer me here, or PM me if you have got these parts.

Hey, TIV.

As you have a K75RT your model have a K100 tank, so you must search battery
covers for K100's.

Thanks Chocolate for your generous offer, and thanks Inge for your great (as always) advise! What I am trying to do is to put a civilian style tailpiece and a bench seat on my K75RT ex Police bike. I bought a used tailpiece that was said to have being taken off a 1990 K75RT, and a bench seat which my friend (who has worked for twenty years on upholstery of car and motorcycle seats) is going to restore for me. The tailpiece seems to fit very well but when I put the side panels on they do look wrong to me. They don´t seem to match well with the tailpiece.

The bike is basically a K75RT model 1990 except that it has LT upper fairing, some extra electricity for the police gismo and the tank is a special police tank with radio box on top and tunnel through it for cables. It is a K100 tank as you say Inge. I can only find this type of tank under K100 in BMW Real OEM. Probably has a police gearing to, the first gear is very low/slow and the fifth gear is pretty high/fast.

I took some photos and would like to ask you to take a look at them and tell me what you think. Here is a link to a shared album in Google Photos.

To fit that tail piece you need the side panels with the pins on the rear edge of them. If you look at the tail piece there will be a hole in the front of each side.
I have a pair of side panels down here, but probably a bit too far away for you.

Hi Bob

After browsing the internet looking for clues, I think that the side panels on my bike are side panels used on official vehicles with K100 tanks. I have seen the panels with the pin on the rear edge on the internet but I´m not sure if these panels will fit at the front because of the K100 tank. Maybe I´ll have to use the side panels I have got? I´m hoping that Inge will chime in with his opinion after looking at the pictures.

Here for example are side panels for sale, that will probably fit the tail fairing, but the fasteners are different and I don´t know if these panels will fit at the front end?

The battery covers you allready have is used on -83 to -85 year models K100's.
The one with pin which bob mentions is used on -86 year models and later K100's.

The bottom half of the fastback is different, but the battery covers you allready have fits both early and late models.........the later model battery covers fits only the later models.

The official models is all using the early models battery covers as the fastback
for the rear mounting pins isn't present.....the rear mounting on the early
battery covers is on the frame.

You keep mentioning K100 tanks, but you will find that most things are the same for K100 and K75. As Inge says there are two main side panels/battery covers, whatever you want to call them. The later have the pin on the back as do the ones that you show in your link and as do the ones that are laying downstairs in my garage.
You have one sort and you need the other.

Hi Bob. The reason I keep mentioning K75 tanks and K100 tanks is this post from Inge. It led me to belief that there is a difference. Am I misunderstanding something here?

The front mounting on the battery covers is different on a K75 compared to the K100's.
K100's have a ear/lug for the covers, K75's doesn't have this ear/lug.....
instead it's hooks on the cover that grabs the seam under the tank.

If you look at this web page you will find that the same tank was fitted to all K100 K1100 and K75 models from 1985 to 1997. This is the standard tank and there will be some variations for Police spec etc, but there is no K100 and K75 tank.

The reason you also find the K75's on the realoem search is that it's a search
only for that specific number......and as earlier said the K75RT using a K100
tank, that's why it's also is uncluded....other K75's have a different tank.

Hey Chocolate, can you take a look at the German market for me? (If you see this post) K100, 1996 and later battery cover is what I need.

Look at the link Inge, the tank is standard for K75, K75c, K75s and K75RT from 89 to 1995 as well as K100's and K1100's.

That link only shows which models that particular tank was used on. There are other model specific tanks.
As far as I know this is a K75 tank. It has a different indented side at the bottom which the K100 doesn't have[solved]Civilian type side panels / battery covers BMW%20K75C%2085
That tank is also used with different radiator side cowls.

Here's a K75 tank, again with the lower indent, with the forward prongs.[solved]Civilian type side panels / battery covers Fuel-tank-bmw-k100-k75

This link shows that tank #16111455101 as discussed above was only used in the US across all models.

Here's some good info on K-tanks and battery covers

TIV,

Just to clarify things. The K75RT uses the K100 tank. All the other K75 models have K75 tanks. Externally there are physical differences between the two tanks with the lugs at the lower front and lower rear where the side covers mate. The manuals also state different volumetric capacity.

The K75RT ex-police model use a single seat and usually have the 83-85 side covers fitted. If you wish to convert to a dual seat with the 86 onwards model duck tail/tail piece then you will require the 86 onwards K100 side covers.

The side covers you have are the 83-85 ones. You need the later 86 onwards ones.

K75s use different side covers except for the K75RT.

How do I know?  I have a 75C, S & RT. I had to order K100 side covers when I converted my K75RT (ex-ambulance bike) to the 86 onwards duck tail. The 83-85 do not fit correctly and aesthetically look ugly.

Some refer to the latter model side covers/duck tail as 86/87 but they are the later model ones anyway.

All K75 models have have the latter model duck tail fitted as original fitment including my 1985 K75C.

Okay then lets look at a tank fitted to Euro models including most K100s and most K75s. How come that everyone is saying that they are all different when the parts fiche are saying otherwise?

Hi Bob,

Always good to hear you valuable input. No idea of the answer to your question though.

A quick check of Motorworks second hand parts confirms the info I provided.

Yep. About thirty years ago a mistake in Mr. Honda's workshop manual for the 400/4 cost me a complete gearbox. I still have what remains of the gears, minus a lot of teeth.

The RealOEM is a bit confusing regarding this part (for my small brain anyway). I'll take some photos and post them later this week when I have time.
