Hi, I have a 1990 K100LT which have a speedometer and distance recorder in miles. Living in Norway, and finding the small km scale difficult to read, I should like to change it to aspeedometer with kms. Would this also involve changing some parts on the Wheel, or will it calibrate as is?

Another much cheaper option is to keep the original instrument cluster and install an additional bike speedometer. Sigma has few models that will read up to 199km/h and are very easy to install.
When setup correctly, they are very accurate. Mine is within 1km/h apart from the GPS read and the difference is too minimal to try to adjust (It could be done).

The only draw back is that mine doesn't have a back light but at night time, I rely on the original instrument cluster.
The support is mounted on the handle bar and the speedo is easily removed from the support by twisting it 1/4 turn.
Check the model 1609 for $45 or model 1812 for $67 here Changing speedometer miles-km Sigma-10

A Speedo healer will convert the reading and miles to Kms https://www.healtech-electronics.com/

Or find a non-working km cluster/speedo for cheap on Fleabay or wherever and swap in the km faceplate.

A speedo healer changes the pulses which also feed to odometer but I -THINK- that should just change your odo from miles to km accordingly.

Has to be the easiest way of doing it.

This was my first thinking until I looked at both speedos.
120kms is exactly 74.56mph. Look at the position of 100k vs 75mph on both faces..
The MPH face goes to 260k and the km face goes to only 240..
Just noticed:
The speedo in kms starts at 10km and the one in MPH starts a 0.

I ran the speedo healer on my wife's K75 for years until I got a cluster at a reasonable price.

There is a counter in the speedometer than converts pulses to voltage (the speedometer) and a drive motor for the odometer.  There may be an easier way to convert it, as simple as a solder switch...stand by!

 (drats)

Gee, quoting myself...the odometer motor is different, the gear ratios.  There are two pots on the electronic board that are used to calibrate the voltage applied to the speedometer movement, one for higher speeds (80 mph) and one for slower (40 MPH)...and they interact.  Joy.  At least you know what the extra marks are for on the speedo face.

So, if you were to swap the dial face out you might be able to calibrate the electronics to match the dial...but ymmv.

If I were you I'd go the speedometer healer route, or buy a speedo that's already in klicks.

Sorry, thought it might be easy..but alas as far as I can see, no.

Just fit the one you want and calibrate it against the GPS on your mobile phone.

A GPS seems to be the last word in accuracy for speedometers.  The speeds on my old '88K has always been right on, but I can't say that about all motorcycle speedometers, they usually read fast, sometimes WAY fast.  My latest ride, a BMW GS is 5 MPH fast at any speed.  Really?

Put new tyres on it and it will be perfect!

If it's less than ten years old then... really. All vehicles now come off the line with speedos that read fast; the stupid idea being that it will reduce speeding. Info courtesy of ComberJohn, who being a driving instructor, should know.

Not sure that it stops speeding. The rule is that a speedo should be no more than 10% out. If they make it read over rather than under, then it saves fines. In many countries in Europe there is no leeway with speeding, if you do 101 kmh in a 100 kmh limit then you will be fined.
It is not possible to make a speedo that is 100% accurate as it will alter with tyre wear, different brands of tyre etc. Having said that a GPS speedo is the most accurate that you will get. If you have an Android phone then just down load "GPS Speedo" it is free.

Maybe that's it.  This motorcycle can read out with an analog speedometer as well as a selected digital speedo, both are exactly 5 MPH high compared to the GPS.  My older R-1200RT speeds are right on the mark until you really get going, GPS speed said 120, speedometer was reading 145!  Whee?  The faster you go the faster it reads, but not in a linear fashion.  The K-100RT, it's accurate no matter how fast you go.  My old Airhead GS was also pretty much right on, but as time went on it began to read slower.  when the K-100 and R-100 GS were new GPS navigators like we have today hadn't come out yet.  In 1991 Sony introduced the IPS-360 "Pixus", being a gadget freak I got one, it had a two line LCD display, it could tell you the speed.  Two channel receiver.  Counter-weighted antenna. Truly a futuristic device of the past...

Yes, this thread has been hijacked...now back to calibrating the MPH speeds to KM/H..

Mine is on mph since its 84 but we went to kms some years back.

We have these road signs that display your speed. 50km on those signs corresponds with 35mph on the speedo. Funny the Rover 75 I drive [they were owned by BMW and are all BMW parts] also reads 35mph at those same signs. The 100km signs match 70mph. Both checked against GPS as well. So for 100km/h true I must go to 70mph on the speedo and that's a long way past 100kmh on the speedo which is at 62.5mph.

Rear tyre should be 130/90 but I use 140/80 and as its now coming down to just legal its about 10mm off the depth of a new 130/90. That's only about a 3% difference.

Doesn't bother me but its worth knowing when it comes to planning long trips.
