Around here they will completely repave miles of highway so they are smooth as silk to ride on and then about a month later they come back and cut holes and slots all over the place refilling them with something called "cold patch" that has the durability of oatmeal.  Less than a year later the road is as bad as it was before.

Job security...

Oh that is sooo wasteful! Here in UK the Highways people wait until some other work is being planned by the water or electric or gas people, then they quickly get the road resurfaced so that someone else has to dig it up lol!

Having just ridden 5400kms from Queensland to Victoria and back I can say that Australia is seemingly perpetually under roadworks somewhere! Buckets Way, Thunderbolts Way, The Putty, Bells Line of Road, Waterfall Way, the Pacific Coast highway, and the New England highway, were patches over patches in many places...then my lower shock stud busted four hours from home.

In fact,Australia with about 24 million souls and being as vast as it is, does a reasonable job of keeping the surfaces sealed as compared to, say, the US, with 330 million and the taxpayers to make it just that little bit smoother going.

...Ireland gains a nearly undeveloped status with 96.6k km earning a 51st placing...

UK crawls in at a lowly 19th with a mere 394k km, falling a fair bit short of Italy (confirming the saying " what did the Romans ever do for us"?)...Having just suffered many, many, miles of roadworks on a recent drive up to Inverness, Scotland, I can confirm that we are doing our best to try and patch up most of it.

...but the place definitely not to own a K100 is Tuvalu with just 8km of roads.

Now, if the table was how many vehicles per km of road, then I reckon we would see a surge in our rankings and even Tuvalu wouldn't need many vehicles to smash their way up the league.

Wonder about the accuracy then....

Dublin to:

Belfast
Galway.
Limerick
Cork
Waterford
Gorey.

All motorway...........a lot more than 96.6km.

Cork to Belfast is over 250 MILES and motorway all the way. Unless Brexit puts a barbed wire barrier back in the middle of it.

An Irish mootorway:

But Olaf - Belfast is in Northern Ireland which is currently part of the UK and therefore Northern Irish roads are in the stats for the UK and the Southern Irish roads do fictitiously stop at the (long may it last) imaginary, blink and you'll miss it, border with Northern Ireland

Also...it's not 96.6km it's 96.6k km i.e. 96,600 km, your Dublin to Gorey trip (the long way round) is a lot less than 96,600km

All said and done, it's not the amount of road a country has, but the quality of the scenery that surrounds those roads that is important...and Ireland (all of it) has that in abundance!

See what you've gone and done Nigel...total de-railed the roadworks thread and made it a willy measuring contest.
 lol!

Uh oh...now I've said de-railed...how long until someone posts a table of who has the most railway track?!
Actually, I wonder in Tuvalu has any trains?

Some years we went to the Cook Islands....32km around the main island at 40 km per hour. The do have a bus service called clockwise and anticlockwise, comes every 10 minutes. But the biggest hit is that the country does not recognise any other driving licence, permit, etc. a.To drive you must have a Cook Island licence at $20 NZ. To obtain this valuable item you must attempt to enter the MAIN police station and fight with chickens and roosters to get to the counter. A 16 year old girl takes your photo and money. To ride a bike/scooter they ask whether you can ride and then take your money. Roads are interesting.

Roughly.... the one before that was 80km and the one before that was 30km. There are a couple of others around the same length plus lots of smaller 10/15/20km straights dotted across the bottom of Oz. They may as well be all joined up into one because the bends from one to the other range from just a few degrees to maybe 20 or 30.
Didn't come across any roadworks till I hit NSW
