Good to see so many others dedicated to the cause. Well after years of Jap bikes and the odd Ducati I've finally seen the light and bought a 94 K100RS.

This things pulls like a train and certainly has some element of dignity about it. I guess we're sick of seeing the same old modern bikes everywhere.

So heartbreak on day 2. Took the old girl over to Shepperton Studios to pick up a thing or two and noticed with dismay that my LH side fairing (battery cover) has fallen off. Thought to myself, er that looks a bit naked.

So yeah, no idea how or why? Maybe it hadn't been replaced properly by the  guys in the shop etc.

Anyway, any idea where to get another? I've scoured the net. Of course, which colour? Guess it'd be a rare thing to nail that too? Think this beast is Royal Blue of some sort. The blue has a darker almost purplish hue. I'll attach some photos. 

Meanwhile I look forward to hearing from others.

Under the seat in front of the taillight housing should be a sticker w/the paint code.

I think you fell victim to 'broken bracket' syndrome. If you pull the other panel off, you'll most likely find that the lower mounting bracket is also cracked right through (or even missing!). If it's still there but cracked, a quick'n'dirty repair is to make a new bracket from a flat piece of ally, add the old rubber gromment, break off the old bracket (yes!) and screw the new one to the stub of the old one. Hmm... hope that made sense! 

For replacement sidepanels, ebay's your friend for the newer versions like yours. The older ones are starting to smell like rockinghorseshit.

From your description, I'd say its Royal Blue 680 which is a metalic. There was also a Bermuda Blue metalic but its lighter. LINK

From your second photo, you can see that the forward mounting point for the cover, the bit hanging down off the rear of the tank, is missing the rubber grommet. I'd say that's why the bit that Dai mentioned, has eventually broken off. You can get the mounting grommets from Motorworks. Check the others. They tend to crack over time from the physical abuse. A little silicone grease will help.
Motorworks may have a side cover as they break K bikes as well.

Welcome to the forum from down under. Your new bike will keep you amused for a long time. You will laugh at how others without a K have not seen the light.

Within half an hour of me owning my bike, I ham-fistedly broke the sidecover mount.

Search the Forum for fixes to your problem. You can repair/reinforce them using some wire from a coathanger and filling the void (have a look at the good one and you'll see what I mean) with epoxy.

There is definitely a knack to removing them!

I agree with Ainsjac...great, often-overlooked bikes. But keep it to yourself!

Hoiked the other pannier off today..no prob, just a rubber gasket thingy and another wee catch. Colour is officially 645. Just a question of getting hold of one now and a little respray maybe. Although in some ways I don't mind it how it is. After all the miles speak for themselves. Back tyre's a bit annoying...one of those square jobbies. Er, massive fuel tank? Good for a couple of hundred miles at least? Maybe it's just been too long since I squirted petrol into a bike tank. Sat nicely on the motorway this evening at 100. Any more and she started to choke a little. Not sure why..

Yup keep the advice coming.

Have a look on the home page on what to do if you have just bought a K. Lots of good tips there. Those grommets mentioned, you probably should pick up 4 new ones and put them in. They wear out from removing the side panels.

Side Pannier ordered. 28quid. Just need some paint now. I have possible intermittent fault with wrong side rear indicator/rear brake light coming on and flashing unless I'm being a complete idiot and is some odd hazard/parking brake function?! Could well be as only does it when headlight on or dodgy electrics I wonder? Thoughts?

Bike is 1991 model re registered by the way. Thought it was dodge when I phoned for insurance. May have come from Wales.

Sounds like you might have some electrical earth issues. Especially as your climate has lots of rain and damp.

In the rear if you remove the rear tail light, fixings are accessed in the rear storage area under the seat. Then you see a connector block. Might need to clean those connections. The brown wires go back in the loom to earth. Indicator connections are inside that rear storage area, also may need cleaning.

Next earth you have is under the petrol tank, about located under where the fuel cap is. Quite a few brown wires coming into one point and bolted on to the frame. Clean off all the connectors. Once they are done they are relatively well protected. You will also find the large connectors from the handlebar switches and should do them. While you are in there you should really clean off the other connectors but do them one at a time and test/check after each one to avoid getting them mixed up. There is an electrical box under the rear of the tank and when you take off the cover you see all the relays. Simply removing and refitting them can clean up a connection there. Wiring diagrams are up on the forum to make it easier.

Specifically on the headlight the Ks don't come with a headlight relay. Put one in, you should be able to position one up in the fairing to avoid altering existing wiring much and you will only need a new fused power supply up from the battery to the relay. A ceramic H4 bulb holder is a wise buy, then connect that to the relay connections.

Getting tank off means disconnecting fuel lines which if they are original really should be replaced. BMW one is not expensive.

Thanks for the great electrical write up Olaf, I'll have to get on to this. So far it's only come up for half an hour on the motorway. Hand signals were quite fun but it took me a while to remember them.

Re your oddball indicators/lights flashing. This could be an indication your starter motor brushes are worn or some other issue with your starter circuit. The starter motor provides an integral earthing for the system and if the brushes are worn you can start to get some really weird electrical behavior.

Yep... there's good torque for sure but best not to let the revs drop too far. 3k rpm ±500 for around town ideally for me. I use 3rd and 4th around city/suburbia and knock it into 5th when there's a bit of a run.

Good to hear you got your side cover sorted. A total coincidence, but just yesterday I bought a L/R set of Jamaica Blue (645) side covers off gumtree. Sorry, but you can't have 'em..
