OK you bunch of disreputable bikies who is going to the Alpine rally.
Mainly asking because I will be bypassing Sidknee on my way and wondering if any want to catch up or tag along or avoid me.

Oh schmidt the Ruptured Budgie is this weekend? Looks like I miss it again. I seem to always have some thing that prevents me going. I have to pull the rear drive out of the K1100.

The Budgie was the first rally I ever went to, a year or so after getting my full licence, with about two days' warning. My partner had been to rallies in older years. We haven't missed one since.

I'm pretty sure my profile pic on here was taken at Mingoola the first year I had Hermann the K100RS.

Hey Rick, 95% sure I'll be packing the winter woollies (remember I live in the low country) and heading down.
Were you planning to go in from the Canberra side or the Tumut side?

Whichever way I decide to go it won't be through Sydney ( no offence to the learned gentlemen that live there) so it's probably down the back of the mountains to Goulburn and then either Canberra, Wee Jasper or around through Gundagi to Tumut. The choice may be influenced by whether I'm on the GS or the K75. Don't think I'll have time to get the water pump done on the K1100 by then (it's heated grips and fairing would be handy though if it's cold).

Some of you southerners must have sleeping bags that are warm enough to venture out for this one.

Looking forward to another great weekend.

Cheers

I was discussing it with my brother who is also going and were thinking of 2 1/2 days and avoiding Sydney like the plague.
We haven't worked out a route yet but most likely to Denman and down to Bathurst then Goulburn, Crapberra and in from that side. I will post when I know more but I would say a meet up around Denman on Friday morning is a definate possibility.

Rossko if you can get away for the Saturday night then let's declare that night the main night for Forum members and it's a done deal.

See you with your woollies on! You might wish you had a fairing after this.

Mostly Saturday night Rossko.  Badges get sold on the Sunday morning(you cannot get them when you arrive on the Saturday) so it's only people that stay overnight, no daytrippers.  Then most people head home Sunday, some will stay as its a long weekend.

For me it will be south via Silverdale, Thirlmere to get me to Mittagong, then the Hume and Federal into Canberra and over the Brindabellas to the site.

Alternately you can get in from the Tumut side (from Tumut or Wee Jasper), both are much more dirt.

Still need to convince myself that 50km of dirt is a good thing.

So Al, you go Brindabella road from Canberra and then left onto Brindabella Valley Road and it is down there somewhere?

There's a back road from Yass to Cotter Dam (west of Canberra) Before you start the dirt road, there is a turn off to the right to Wee Jasper. I believe that it is now fully sealed to Wee Jasper. The road from WJ to Tumut is a nightmare!

C'mon Rossko, you know it will be great fun. Those RS bars are great on loose gravel roads and the low seat keeps the feet close to the ground to act as outriggers. It will be more fun if there is rain.

What could go wrong????  Then next year you'll be looking for a route that gives you even more kms of dirt road. What's more I've recently shown you all how easy it is the park your bike horizontally.

Hey Rick, that road through to Tumut from Wee Jaspar is one of the best around for testing out the security of your fairing mounts on an LT.

Cheers

"Hey Rick, that road through to Tumut from Wee Jaspar is one of the best around for testing out the security of your fairing mounts on an LT."

I think I will pass on that till I get the K75GS on the road.  Least dirt the better for now.
Charlie was saying that there is a lot of clay and all the roads are to be avoided if wet especially on a road bike with low guards.

Yep, that's about it. If you cross the Goodradigbee River at the valley floor you've just gone a bit too far.  Should be signposted at that intersection.

I reckon I'll be there, I'll take either the sidecar or the Yam (since buying and riding the 16v, the Super Ten has hardly been ridden this year and I'm being reminded about it now).  Marie is unlikely to go, so I'll leave the mutts at home too to keep her company.

just out of interest , my DJP chair still has the Alpine Rally sticker from 1984 on the windscreen, looking through the facebook photos , it looks a lot like the little black chair from the 1977 photo. so instead of risking the chance of frostbite on the Brindabella"s I think I'll just wonder down to the back shed and glance at the old boy and think of you guys.
besides , work has me on call for the weekend , sorry guys.

Hey RickG,

I'm thinking of doing a loop around if the weather stays dry, in from the east side via the road down from Yass that Uli suggested and out via Tumut.
I'll be setting off on Friday morning and maybe stay over Friday night at Crookwell or Yass then into the rally site on Saturday. See if my route heading south is anywhere that you and your brother may be going.

Rossko and Al, if you come down on Saturday morning we may be able to arrange a meeting point out in the Cotter Dam area.

Cheers

Good on you Rick.

Put up a post if the hotel there looks OK and if you contact them put me down for a room as well.

Should work well, if I don't find you along the road during the day we'll meet up at the pub on Friday night. I prefer to get a pub along the way and then crack out the tent at the rally site.

Cheers

Crookwell eh?

If I leave work a bit early I can almost get there before dark.

Might have to talk to the handbrake and convince her this is a good option.

I could say the alternative is Rick AND his brother stay at our place affraid . That should get me the tick of approval.

Hopefully got the E705 dual sport  purpose shinkos on the way and will be heading down via lots of hard packed, dry dirt roads.
Measured the gap between the front guard mount points and it is 130mm. My 140 sport demon fits between the forks but not under the guard. Fingers crossed my 120 front shinko will squeeze in there. Got the razor blade at the ready to trim a milll off if required.  Ooze goin 2 tha Alpine Relly (Oztalk)June long weekend 652573

Any sign of rain will also see me snug and dry at home.

Might be a workshop day at Floyds place, or a trip to the 'gong to check out the stable at the home of the Wazzaz.

Listen carefully, I will say this only once.
1 cup of pure cream.from a cow, not a bean, nut or anything thing else that doesn't moo.
1 cup of lemonade
3 cups of self raising flour
pinch of salt
plain flour for dusting
jam and cream (you can buy clotted cream here now mmmmmmm).

Preheat oven to 200c or 180c fan forced.
Place all ingredients in a bowl, hand mix lightly (use a wooden spoon, otherwise they taste like grease)
Scrape mixture onto a flour covered smooth surface (fuel tank, car bonnet)
Knead lightly, flatten out to about 3cm high, use a vegemite glass jar with flour on the edge as a cutter.
Keep flattening dough out and cutting as much as you can.
Put them all on a tray, close together, that's the important bit, dust with plain flour and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the tops are brown.
Serve with jam and thick cream from a cow, not a can.

Get a cholesterol check asap.

Pass the cream. Clotted if you don't mind. sick

great recipe Bob , amazing what a difference the lemonade makes , just don't spill any in the tank.

I may have misread your instructions, did you mean to say.....
Preheat oven  K bike to 1200c or 1800c, with fan on full forced.
Place all ingredients in a  bowl oil pan , hand mix lightly (use a wooden spoon dipstick, otherwise so they taste like grease)
Scrape mixture onto a flour covered smooth surface (such as a K100 fuel tank, car bonnet)
Knead lightly, flatten out to about 3cm high by rolling the tyre over repeatedly, use a vegemite glass jar tailight lens with flour on the edge as a cutter.
Keep flattening dough out with front tyre, and cutting as much as you can.
Put them all on a drip tray, close together, that's the important bit, dust with plain flour and bake for 15-20 minutes near where your knees sit ,or until the tops are brown it is too hot to sit on the bike any longer.
Serve with jam and thick cream from a cow, not a can.

Viva le Skones.

Minor panic at my place this afternoon.

3 BMWs in the shed; exhaust system and final drive currently off the R80G/S for minor repairs, water pump leaking on the K1100 (parts here to do when time permits).

Get home and notice oil all over left fork leg on K75 which was the steed planned for this weekend. Seal shot!

Look around at most likely repair that can be fitted in before Friday morning and fit work in as well. Ah, it's probably the K1100 water pump. Could be a couple of late nights.

Still looking forward to riding on Friday
Cheers

Seems I have caught the pump bug.

I noticed a few days ago a bit of oil accumulating around the front of the pump. No biggie.

Water was leaking out today.

So glad I have a pigeon pair.

Sorry to have brought on the pump virus Rosskko.

My pump on as well, sealant cure time now, fluids and test on Thursday. I'm not as dedicated with photos of the work.

So with pump rebuilds being what they are I have a 50/50 chance of it being successful. I'll keep you guys posted whether I'm a starter or not.

Rosskko, if I make the trip, I planned to take a back road to Yass from Crookwell rather than go down to Gunning (I have an aversion to major highways) so if you let me know when you expect to arrive in Yass I'll work towards that time to meet up.

Cheers

Want stir up the locals.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent image of some GS 1000 decals.

The tank one, 1000 and the rear seat/ cowling one that says GS.

I just want to print some off.

Like this

My simple brain seems to think this will be funny with my new shinko E705 dual sport tyres.

Why don't you try Suzuki, they might be able to help

{pedant mode}
R100GS, not GS 1000, just like BMW never made an LT1100 or an RS1000

 Sad

Looks like a few nice days ahead 1°C for Friday night and -1°C for Saturday and Sunday with some frost mornings and sunny days according to forecasts so you can't blame me when it snows.

Hey RickG, enjoy the riding tomorrow. I'll be in touch after I've tested the K1100 tomorrow. Hope to meet up on Friday morning.

How are you going with the decals Rosskko? A black 1000 on the red tank would look good.

Cheers

P.S.  ran across a good looking red dog in a sidecar in Newcastle this afternoon trying to keep her owner under control.
