the lower half of the battery clamp, the alloy plate the battery sits on...

on mine this is only secured to the transmission box by one bolt, front right. the others hold rubber mounts that just sit on top the transmission. I have a feeling that these other mount should also be attached to the trans, do these need replaced or is this normal?

All being original, the rubber mounts have a 6mm threaded post top and bottom. The bottom one screws into threaded holes in the gearbox top, the top one goes through the battery carrier and is held on by a nut.

Common enough for the threads on the posts to be worn or corroded away. Maybe 3 or 4 new rubber mounts needed, and hopefully the threads in the gearbox are ok. 

I had to do a similar job on Bob the Blue Old Bike recently.

You can buy 6mm rubber bobbins cheap enough from Motorworks although most engineer supply companies would have something similar. They're on my list for replacement

If the rubber is busted it could be a bit of an issue getting them out of the GB housing if there is corrosion. a soak in something penetrating will help.

yeah so it seems I have 3 part rubbers stuck in the bell housing. happy days. I didn't think this was right. any tips on removing the remaining rubbers and bolt? if I scrape the rubber off, whats the chances of enough threaded bar sticking out to get some grips on?

There will be a small plate on the top of the threaded section, welded to it, and you can sometimes get a hold usung vise grips or use a small cold chisle to knock it undone far enough to get hold of it.
those rubber mounts are very common on many GM cars they are used under the air box. They are a tad longer so you need to use 4, you cant mix them.

Before you cut the rubber off, try gripping then with molegrips or a pipe wrench and twist/pull. Based on my own experience my bet is that they will come out straight. The threads on the anti-vib mounts will be completely rusted away and all that's holding them in is corrosion. Hopefull you'll find that the threads in the gearbox are intact but you will need to clean them up with a 6mm x 1mm tap before screwing new ones in.

new rubbers ordered. blown away by what beemer charge for them. obviously I went for the 2 quid version.

Right,  you know one of those jobs that should only take 10 minutes...........

Bloody things. I've got 3 threads with domed ends locked solid. Fair play I tried to do it in a hurry whilst waiting for the wife but mole grips did nothing but chew them to peices so I decided to drill them and use the stud extractors. I've now got one with a broken extractor inside to deal with. 

I'm done for today. I'll pick this up with a cool head and less time constraints.

Just attacked this job on mine, as I noticed the battery was resting against the rear guard. On my bike, the bobbins are in good nick, but the thread is gone out of the holes in the case. There is thread further down, so I will probably put some other rubbers there and bolt through them.

I used one of their products to remount my battery tray ...just had to cut off the top stud length to suit
after retapping the lost threaded sections on the gearbox to get some grip ...as the first 12 mm or so was gone   worked well

Thanks Charlie, ordered some now.

When I replaced my battery holder rubbers, I made some polythene washers to go between the metal disc of the new rubbers and the aluminium casing of the gearbox to reduce the chances of corrosion.

So, hopefully, the next time I need to replace them, I won't have to resort to a hammer and chisel to get them off the gearbox.

I managed to get one of mine out without damage. Broke one and left the other 2 alone. The one I got out I applied some aluminium grease used on exhaust studs (like copper slip) on the thread. At least that one should come out easily when I get replacements.
