As Time Goes By
 
So the 14^th of November Nineteen Twenty Eight,
Means nothing to you, yet it’s a special date,
To me it is notable it’s the day of my birth,
Almost eighty-eight years since I came to this earth,
A life full of learning, happy days , some sad,
But on the whole it’s not been too bad,
My family and friends I sing high their praises,
Some strangers I’ve met in man’s seven phases.
 
 
Wonderful times through those years of my teens,
I had lots of energy; I was full of beans,
New suits, clean-shaven, not a hair out of place,
Girls had stiff petticoats that were trimmed with lace,
Court shoes, high heels, straight seams in nylon hose,
On Saturday night at the dance they would pose,
So slim, so feminine, rustling skirts broke the hush,
Of course in those days my thoughts made me blush.
 
At my age I sit and watch the girls going past,
Most fat and unkempt; their marriages don’t last,
They all wear the same, the uniform of teens,
Tight trousers, anoraks, fag ash and jeans,
Politeness, respect, it’s all going downhill,
It’s been like this since they introduced the pill,
Kids with no Dad but with money to burn,
It all spells disaster, will they never learn.
 
Let’s get back to those days when a man and his word,
You could rely on, and a woman to swear was not heard,
Why can’t we all try to consume fewer calories?
Get back to basics, not material things and higher salaries,
When discipline at schools is administered don’t moan,
After all said and done this should be taught in the home,
Lets teach deportment, honesty and charm,
Teach children these ideals, then there’s no cause for alarm.

It is November here in the U.K,
A damp and foggy dark dismal day,
A very fine mist that soaks you through,
Bare branches with cobwebs that hang with dew,
Emigrating birds, they have now gone,
We’ll not be woken with their morning song,
Wet leaves have fallen they stick together,
November in England has the foulest of weather.
 
Everything’s wet, they’re indoors by their fires,
Dirt’s thrown up by the swish of car tyres.
Double Decker red buses aren’t red at the back,
The filth from the roads changes red into black.
House lights are on till eleven or more,
A waste of time really, they’re back on at four,
The hedgerows are covered in old mans beard,
Same for tomorrow?   Just as we feared!
 
The rear lamps of vehicles are closely followed,
Keep them in sight, if not they’ll be swallowed,
In November fog, wet mist and it’s haze,
That’s what its like, so be warned of these days,
When coming to visit you are welcome that’s true,
But please don’t expect our skies to be blue.
People look huddled their necks seem to go,
They scurry along, shoulders high heads bowed low,
 
Roll on next month, that’s dry cold and freezing,
Away from grey days, folk coughing and wheezing,
To get there of course there’s November to suffer,
Glance at the calendar there’s no month that’s rougher,
Creepy damp cold that gets to the bone,
Makes one appreciate the comfort of home,
Draw back the curtain when leaving your bed,
Look out, to November, may just as well be dead!

Really nice words too. The great thing about this forum too is that there is a place for good thoughts.

Ajays What a description of November, you must try a better Hemisphere for that month, If I could write so beautifully I would pen a short but fine description of November here, we do have clear sky clear mornings start about 5:30ish finish around 21:00ish we have the odd little cold day, called a cold snap, never a frost though 35degrees C can be reached, warm beach filled days either ocean or river for those not employed to do other things. Endless roads to ride before the heat hits and stops one from riding in the northern parts. Down south its just a long lunch for the hottest part of the day to pass.
