I found this 15,000 mile 1991 K1 that had been stored for 7n years. Non running, needing a few plastic parts.

Diagnosis is that the fuel system in the tank is frozen shut by solidified gas. Replaced all the tank components, flushed the tank and all is well now.

Nice bike for under $2000.

Looks like you got yourself a bargain there.

Love the idea of "solidified gas" - especially when your "gas" is actually liquid.

Mine was ordered without the silver K1 decals.

The gas in the tank had a consistency of broken pieces of amber.

Wow! excellent find! I am certainly envious.
In the article "About the BMW k1", how true are the facts about the "remarkable low  noise level to the rider" and the stated fact that "you can ride the k1  fast and effortless for a long distance".

I have a tank here that has similar substance in it. I was told it was a tank sealing compound that was meant to coat the entire surface of the inside but over time it flowed to the bottom of the tank and became a solid mass which usually encased the lower part of the pump. It now has no adhesion to the tank and is in one solid lump and wont come out. I am thinking of using the tank for an experiment on making a larger tank.

Interesting graphics.  I like them.  It doesn't look like a bike for tall riders....

Actually, I"m 6-2 with a 34" inseam and am quite comfortable putting in long days on it. I do it wearing Kevlar lined riding jeans though. I think full knee armor would be a little scrunched in the leg department however.

Hi all!
Best wishes.
It's been a while since was here.
Arrgh!  Had a fall down in the wet with a front tire that should not have been counted on in those conditions.
Broken collarbone.  Fine now, but bike/fairing mostly, needs attention.

For someone looking for a K1 in US near Louisville, Kentucky

http://louisville.craigslist.org/mcy/5476571537.html  $4500

I'll never forget the BMWMOA rally held in a vast fairgound at York, Pennsylvania in the Summer of '89. I was 29, had ridden my R75/7 Airhead down to PA from Massatucky, where I was living at the time, with several mates on various other Airheads. The rally was the largest they'd had to date with over 9,000 registered attendees. It was hot. I'd ridden a mate's '85 K100RS at the Finger Lakes rally a few years earlier (pulling a trailer) but wasn't smitten with K bikes yet.

After setting up our tents, me scoffing to myself at the whine emanating from the arriving K whizzers, we grabbed coldies and wandered about the vendor booths. Parked near the BMW truck were two spankin' new K1 models, a red/yellow and a blue/yellow. I wasn't awestruck, but I had a good squiz at them to see if I could suss out what they were made of, what made them different.

That first and second nights the band played and I don't remember much, but I was smiling ear to ear and laughing with me mates. It was something about piss and peace and beauty, and being 29. I probably embarrassed myself.

That same weekend BMW rolled out the safety-caged ABS K100 and throughout the event staged various high and low speed panic stops on wet straw, sand and other slippery surfaces, proving how effective their new system would eventually be in keeping us upright in panic stops.

Saturday night at the awards ceremony, two German reps, in those awful '80s era, tight fitting silver, grey and blue two-piece leather suits BMW used to sell, rode the K1s onto the dusty horse track and circled in perfect sync while the massive throng sat eagerly in the 'bleechers' watching with a mixture of awe, and for some of my neighbours, distain. It's ingrained in my mind's eye. I've been a distant fan of the Mighty K1 ever since.

I prefer the black ones.
