This might not apply to K models but since some are now close to 35 years old perhaps it should kept in mind.
Last year the tachometer needle on my R90S started to make a clicking noise and rapidly flicker from idle to around 3000 revs. I removed the instrument cluster and took it to a specialist where a small gear was replaced and as a precaution replace the cable. I also took this opportunity to recalibrate the speedometer. (Police tend to spoil the ride) (I got the K speedo calibrated last month)
The rapid flickering re-appeared yesterday. Strange I thought, the new gear and cable shouldn’t have worn out that quickly. I took it back and the man confirmed my thought. Tests showed everything was running perfect UNTIL he touched the OUTER cable. It turned out that the now 40 year old outer cable has become so old and inflexible that it was ‘interfering’ with the inner cable operation.
He’s making a new cable, re-assemble and test out it on his work bench. I’ll pick it up tomorrow. Cost $40
