I am about to glue a bearing race in place in order to prevent it from spinning. What is the best way to prep the metal for the epoxy? From what I've read I am not only supposed to clean it but abrade it slightly. I'm not too keen on doing this unless it's absolutely necessary.
I'm using Loctite 272.

Is that Loctite 272 recommended for locking bearings?  You mention epoxy, but I think Loctite has a specific product for locking bearings against spinning.

As far as roughing up the surface, a light scuff with 320 grit should be enough.  I would tape up the bearing to make sure none of the abrasive gets in it.

I'm converting a 6-rivet to a later 12-rivet output shaft. The latter has this bearing cast with a "shoulder", whereas the earlier bearings (like this one) feature a circlip to mitigate movement. 

Since the shouldered bearing cannot be fitted onto an earlier engine block, Clymer (and a BMW bulletin of yore) recommends that this bearing be glued into place to prevent possible spinning and fore/aft movement. 


I hate to admit it but it kinda looks like this bearing has done some slipping/spinning. Anyhoo, here's my situation: two smooth, machined metal surfaces on which 'glue' must find purchase. 
I chose Loctite 272 - after poring over forums and adhesive sites - for its anaerobic, heat and strength capabilities.

I emailed loctite when I rebuilt my engine and output shaft. The original number loctite can't remember the number was no longer made.

They said I should use loctite 641 bearing fix.

I used it and have had no problems.

It does help, smoll1, and thank you. But looking at the specs its rated to 300F / 149C. Is that a safe range? 

Locktite 272 is a threadlocker. You need a retaining compound. There are 2 types, 'press fit' and 'slip fit' with high temp and oil resistant products.

Looks like smoll1 is right; 641 is the business. Point Seven-Five is right as well; a light scuffing w/a mild abrasive, followed by cleaner/degreaser.

Once you have roughed up the surface clean it with acetone. Loctite recommend MEK but I dont like using it, not very nice stuff to be around.

I thought about temperatures too. I confirmed this with loctite twice as was not sure and they confirmed it was OK. Seems ok. I also changed to 12 rivet output shaft. I noticed old one had been spinning too. This why contacted loctite as no damage had been done but suppose could of if it continued
