Hi all,

I'm new to BMW. In fact, I don't have much riding experience at all. My first bike was a 77 CB550. I had it for three years and was offered twice what I paid, so I sold it. I went five or six years with out a bike and last spring I decided to jump on an 85 K100RT. It was stripped down a bit to look like the base K100 and has dual sport tires on it. I have all or most of the fairing and misc parts in boxes. They all need a little cleaning up, but I'm thinking about putting it back together.

Any advice for me?

WelKome along CBski.
As long as your bike is running ok, I'd say just ride her as she is for the time being and enjoy. Plenty of time for her to evolve into the machine you want.

There are a couple of options tho.
1. Ride her naked. Quite a few of us prefer it that way. However, from that tiny pic you posted it looks like you still have RT handle bars. You might find it easier to cope with the wind better in a more prone riding position by installing RS bars. You'll need to swap cables and brake line. Not difficult to do.

2. Restore her to her former RT glory. The RT fairing does a great job of protecting the rider from the cold and rain. The down side of this is that she will be more difficult to work on. Some remove just the lowers which means you can get the tank off pretty easily and you'll have good access to the engine for maintenance.

There's plenty of info on this forum which ever way you go.
Here's 3 bit of advice to get you started...
- Check out the links on the Portal Tab
- Learn how to use the forum search box
- Learn how to post a pic

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the world of bricks. It's all about choice and making the bike look the way you want it. I prefer naked but try it with the fairing, you can always take it off again.

I ride all year and don't go for the naked option due to our climate. If your climate is good enjoy the naked bike for now.

But with practice one does get used to shifting the fairing quickly, its quite a lot easier in time. A 10mm socket on a very short ratchet screwdriver, a cross head bit on the same ratchet screwdriver and those are the only tools needed to remove the lowers, knee panels, inner baffles and storage boxes.

A flexible drive extender is exceedingly useful too because with it you can get at the bolts on the relays in the relay box without removing the gas tank, if you extend your fuel lines when you are replacing them as you should.

Pop up some photos of the fairing bits and we can tell you if anything is missing.

Hello neighbor, CBski (I am in A2 also). It looks like a nice bike. Since it is snowing this morning, maybe you have a nice garage to practice fairing assembly. It might come in handy when riding weather resumes in a couple of months, because it will still be chilly. But then when the weather gets hot, the fairing does tend to retain heat, which is why some people remove the lowers for summer.
