I'm restoring a BMW K75 that's had it frame chopped up Crying or Very sad so therefore nothing fits and the wiring is just a pile of spaghetti , But I'm sure I will be able to sort it with the help of the forums.

Welcome!

My project is nowhere near as ambitious as yours but I've already had some great answers and help from the forum. I'm sure you will too.

Well the bike is registered in the UK as K75S 1999 , but that's the time it came from the USA and I believe it's around 1995 when new.

Thanks TJB a late model K75s a beautiful bike indeed, when you've started be sure to do a before and after pic so we can see the changes. You can see in the pics section some very pretty K75's and a few very well put together S's

Good lord TJB they really know how to chop a frame up your way, a trip to the breaker yard may make a rebuild much easier, but yep a before pic is definitely the go.

If wiring is so badly changed I would go for a replacement loom. Otherwise you will have nightmares as no one else will be able to do anything with it and a buyer might run a 4 minute mile from it.

I need to inform you guys of why I started this `project`. I was asked by a biker friend if I would like to take it on because he was well aware that I needed projects to keep me active in mind after 20 years of being a full time carer to my sweet Wife after her devastating stroke which left her totally dependant on me for even the smallest bodily function even spoon feeding and not able to have a verbal conversation etc. Of course I never complained even though it was a 24 hour daily task. She passed away a couple of years ago and I can't get over it to this day.
So the bike has to be worked on as is, with the botched frame etc and I'm sure you can understand the full impact of the trials as I try to even find places to fit all the bits, Battery, EMI, ignition control, all the relays. not to mention the bunch of wires that came with the pile of bits. But I'll get there in the end because I love a challenge Rolling Eyes If it was easy I would most likely not be doing it Laughing
I'll see if I can find a place on the forum to continue with this project rather than here on New Members.
Ride safely.
John

That's a soft heart background and you are very much in the right place on this forum. A few of the guys when you get to know them will know what this means and I have seen some friends go through something similar. Your friend who passed on the K75 project to you has really done the right thing and the end result will be life enhancing.

Everyone will be very helpful and when [not if] you get this K sorted take time to take a trip over this way. Some new experiences, maybe even some camping in some rather nice places would do the mind good. No budget breaking stuff, just nice places and some nice roads and we take time to smell the flowers and feel the air. Some of us venture further afield and even better sometimes some of our Australian K owners drop in on us over here. There is a good collection of like minded K owners over here and we would be happy to see you. We have had camping visitors from the UK this year and I enjoyed over a week off with them. Also had a camping trip in France where we met some forum K owners last year who have become very good friends. 88KE has left a K or two down there with them for return visits.....

On the K75 your best bet is to start a thread for the project and that way you can have everything you need in the one place. There will be times you ask a question on something that is already answered on the forum and when you do someone generally posts up a link to it rather than a smart ass answer. Once we get to know you better you will of course get some good natured banter.

Olaf

Looking at that frame's rear section I would be very afraid that even if it didn't squirm like riding a snake it would crack right behind the tank.  It looks like there is a major stress concentration at that top tube behind the tank.

First thing I would do is find a good frame to do the build on.  They are out there and fairly inexpensive.  It would be a shame to do all the work to finish the bike, and then have it break the first bump you hit at speed.

With the greatest respect John, I feel there are other much better options for you rather than continuing with your mate's poorly planned project. This would be a waste of your valuable time and money. Get an engineer to inspect it. Its going to need an MOT inspection eventually and to be honest... it may not pass due to those crazy modifications. I have to agree with Point-Seven-Five, it doesn't look too good strength wise. The K frame has been designed the way it is for a reason... to accommodate the monolever. Apart from being weak, I'd take a guess and say your machine probably may not handle safely when you get it all together.

Sorry to hear about your wife mate. We can only imagine how difficult it would have been for both of you. You sound like a very couragous guy. Others here with similar stories will tell you how life can lead you over a difficult path sometimes but now its time to get that K sorted Very Happy ..... ask and you'll get all the advice you need.

Somebody correct me on this, but IIRC the main difference between a K100 and a K75 frame is that the front downtubes on a K75 go back at a steeper angle (okay, so some of the brackets are slightly different too). Given that and given the amount of work necessary on the existing frame to stop it from cracking (it will crack - I've built/worked on enough full blown customs to know stress patterns), it might be easier to raid ebay for a K100 frame and get a competent frame builder to modify the downtubes? The only thing wrong with that idea is that it may raise the front of the engine a couple of mm?

INGE!!! Laughing Laughing

Keith, The Bobber is the one my mate wants so I'm bound to go along with him. I was finding that all the challenges were keeping my mind fully occupied away from the continuing mental nightmares of the past miserable years. I've done a lot of work on the bike since I was asked to take it over which made me feel good every time something came together in a satisfactory manner; I know you must have had these moments too ?
But now, since this new discusion regarding the `stress points` on the frame has emerged I'm left feeling  dejected. I had checked the frame and the `chopped bit` and my thoughts were it is well held at the rear by three bolted positions as was the original to the engine and gearbox and the welds afre very well done in my opinion by a professional welder. This made me fell more confident to continue.
I now fully trust and appreciate the comments from the guys on this forum who are well experienced in these matters which puts me in between a rock and a hard place Sad I thought that my only problem was to sort out this `spaghetti wiring` a headache in a large proportion to say the least. It being original American bike wiring system. I'm going to stick my head in the fridge now.

All power to your arm for taking on the project and being faithful to your mate's dream. Very Happy

The best news is your report of the welding being done to a high standard by a professional welder. I like to think of myself as a competent welder, but wouldn't like to trust my own work to that extent.

Presuming your system to be similar to here in Oz, for being able to register it for road use it will need to be checked by a suitably qualified engineer. To my unqualified eye, I would be concerned about the shock mount, and next, whatever will hold the seat up. (A pillion seat too?)

I would get advice from the person who will ultimately have to certify the frame mods to see if what has been done will be OK, and if not, what will need to be done to make it OK. Also, get advice about how the seat you have in mind will be mounted. It would be a serious shame to have it all done and find it would only be allowed to be an unregistered static display.

Many on this forum aren't particularly attracted to cafe racers or bobbers, but most are accepting of other peoples' tastes, unless they are trashing a good one to make it. Not the case in your situation.

The advice to try to source a 'new' wiring loom is good. If you are able to remove it yourself and label what the wires were disconnected from that would be a big help, if not always possible.

All the best,

Bill
